On Sunday, the 10th of the Lunar Bhutanese calendar, which fell on the 24th of September 2023, Bhutan celebrated THRUENBAB, a special and sacred day for Bhutanese Buddhists. It is believed that on this day, the Buddha known as NAMPAR NANGSEY, adorned with priceless jewels on its head, aligns with a star called REKI, resulting in the production of holy water. This holy water falls from the Buddha's head for seven consecutive days, cleansing all accumulated defilements over countless eons. To commemorate this auspicious occasion, Bhutanese people prepare a beautiful altar and offer veneration to deities early in the morning.
The day typically begins with a hearty breakfast consisting of porridge known as THUKPA and butter tea, accompanied by special rice called SUJA DREYSI. In our college, we gathered in the dining hall at 8:00 AM, along with guests from ECU and fellow students. The meal service started with tea, Thukpa, and Suja shamday. However, Tshering Dorji's family kindly offered me tea, dresi, and thukpa too.
At noon, when I found myself alone, I prepared Sekam, rice, and dal to celebrate in my own way. It's worth noting that on this auspicious day, it is customary to avoid consuming meat. However, I decided to have meat, albeit with hesitation.
On the preceding nights, cultural shows were organized, especially for our friends from ECU. We hoped they enjoyed it, I acknowledged that the program had some repetitions and may not have been up to the mark.
I was disappointed over the recent damage to the Music and Cultural room, which had been recently renovated. The damage occurred due to the negligence of club members, but I hoped it would be repaired and restored to its original state soon.
Although I couldn't attend the last mentoring session, I requested co-mentors to lead the session. Unfortunately, I didn't receive any information from the co-mentors, and I apologize for any inconvenience caused.
To alleviate boredom, I watched Thimphu Tshechu, and I would like to emphasize the importance of engaging is to engage with full dedication and maintaining pure intentions, dedicating your actions to all sentient beings.
In summary, THRUENBAB is a significant and spiritually meaningful celebration in Bhutan, marked by rituals, traditional food, cultural performances, playing games, and a focus on purity of intent and dedication to all sentient beings.
